Scale AI interview
Forward Deployed Engineer / Forward Deployed Software Engineer (incl. Public Sector) · Frontier Agents Engineer (Forward Deployed Engineering) · Deployment Strategist / AI Deployment Strategist
Process
Online assessment
60-min HackerRank, one hard project-style problem. Assesses: Producing working code fast on a multi-part build. [2][1]
Recruiter screen
Non-technical resume walk-through. Assesses: End-to-end ownership, FDE vs SWE preference, motivation for customer work. [2][1]
Non-technical phone screen
Behavioral/project discussion. Assesses: Whether you have built something end to end. [2]
Coding phone screen
~60-min project-oriented HackerRank over video; a PDF outline may be sent beforehand. Assesses: Completion over optimality, pace, narrated reasoning. [2][1]
Onsite (five rounds)
Credo (values behavioral), coding, system design, debugging in a large unfamiliar repo, hiring manager. Assesses: Scale's six credos; code volume and adaptation; LLM/AI system design; navigation of unfamiliar code; FDE vs SWE placement. [2][1][4]
Deployment Strategist loop (one report)
Recruiter screen -> hiring-manager technical with shared screen and live SQL -> behavioral phone interview. Assesses: Motivation; diagnosing a customer data-quality problem with SQL while thinking aloud. [3]
Questions
System design 2
Design a claims-processing backend with retrieval and token-cost control.
Attributed to candidate reports
Design an enterprise RAG system under privacy and latency constraints.

Coding 4
Given several parties' time intervals, find the periods where none of them overlap.
Guide attributes to one reported candidate experience
Using room-booking data, work out which rooms are free and when.
Attributed to candidate reports
Merge adjacent segments sharing the same modifiers, then toggle a modifier over a start-to-end range.
Attributed to candidate reports

Debugging 1
Explain why the system returns no model output; root cause sat in prompt-hashing logic several layers down.
Attributed to one reported round
SQL and data 1
A client says the data quality Scale supplies has dropped over the past month. Diagnose it, using live SQL.
Behavioral 2
Why did you leave your last role?
Describe your hardest project, and how you handled ambiguous requirements.

Motivation 1
Why do you want to work at Scale AI?
Tips from the sources
- Prepare as for a full SWE loop (hard coding, system design, debugging); the process felt SWE-coded with role fit sorted out later. [2]
- Practice debugging inside a large repository you did not write; that round can surprise you. [2]
- Have detailed stories about projects you built end to end; ownership mattered early. [2]
- For the Deployment Strategist SQL round, know the common causes of data-quality decline and walk the interviewer through each line of investigation aloud. [3]
- Map behavioral stories to Scale's published credos (e.g. Earn Customer Love, Quality is Our Cheat Code). [1][4]
- If a PDF outline is sent before the coding screen, read it closely. [1]
Not found in public sources: Scale publishes no interview-process description; postings mention interviews only in compensation boilerplate. The one first-hand FDE report has its specific questions paywalled, so FDE question prompts rely on a third-party guide's candidate-attributed samples. Deployment Strategist evidence is a single report. No AI-in-interview policy found.
