OpenAI interview

Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) · Forward Deployed Software Engineer · AI Deployment Engineer · Technical Deployment Lead, FDE

6 stages and 15 questions from 4 sources, newest 2026-05. 34 open roles in the jobs snapshot.

Process

  1. Recruiter screen

About 30-min call. Assesses: Why forward-deployed work specifically, hands-on LLM/API experience, background fit. [1]

  2. Recruiter screen (candidate account)

Call; recruiter explains the loop. Assesses: Behavioral fit; candidate was told the loop centres on a take-home plus a live coding screen. [2]

  3. Early technical stage (varies by team)

One of: ~1-week take-home case study with walkthrough; back-to-back coding and system design screens; or a single project-based phone screen. Assesses: Ability to build a working LLM application and tie design choices to customer needs. [1]

  4. Take-home project

About 1 week; submit code and a running app, then walk an engineer through design decisions. Assesses: Framing the use case, retrieval design choices, explaining trade-offs in customer terms. [2]

  5. Live technical interview

Multi-step, easy LeetCode-style problem; candidate describes it as AI-enabled. Assesses: Working code, then time and memory complexity. [2]

  6. Virtual onsite / final round

Third-party guide: 4-6 interviews over 1-2 days (coding, system design, project deep dive, behavioral). Candidate account: panel of about four plus hiring manager revisiting the take-home. Assesses: Production coding, LLM/agent system design, defending past decisions, customer-facing judgment. [1]

  • Design an end-to-end batching system for LLM requests, balancing latency against cost.

Coding 4
  • Solve a multi-step delivery-rate calculation problem, then state its time complexity and memory efficiency.

Take-home 1
  • Build a semantic search system over Amazon product data that ChatGPT can query; ship code and a working app, then present the design.

Customer scenario 1
  • For the take-home: what is the use case, and how specific should search results be for different customer intents?

Presentation 2
  • Where in your design did you choose one path over another, and why?

  • Present a challenging system you built; defend the key design decision, its trade-offs, and how you evaluated it.

Tips from the sources

  • Coding still matters, but the candidate advises against over-investing in hard LeetCode; the live problem was easy and multi-step. [2]
  • Practise explaining technical choices in plain language and linking each to a customer need; the take-home review centred on this. [2]
  • Prepare case-style system design, including how you would adapt the solution when the customer's needs change. [2]
  • The early technical stage differs by team; confirm with the recruiter which format you will get and whether AI tools are allowed per round. [1]
  • Job postings stress up to 50% customer travel, discovery and scoping, and feeding field learnings back to Research and Product; expect to be probed on these. [4]

Not found in public sources: openai.com/interview-guide (which reportedly states that AI-tool permission varies by interview) returned HTTP 403 to our fetcher, so OpenAI's own AI-use policy and stage descriptions are not captured; aiPolicy is left empty. No Reddit or blog first-hand FDE accounts found; only one detailed candidate report (S2). Nothing found for Deployment Lead / AI Deployment Engineer loops specifically. IGotAnOffer's OpenAI FDE guide also returned 403.
