Databricks interview
Forward Deployed Engineer · Sr. Forward Deployed Engineer · AI Engineer - Forward Deployed Engineering (AI FDE) · Deployment Strategist · Forward Deployed Engineering Architect
Process
Recruiter screen
About 30-min call with a non-technical recruiter. Assesses: Motivation (why Databricks, why FDE), location and level fit, prior client-facing work. [2]
Technical screen
45-60 min. Candidate reports describe a rapid-fire set of about five short questions (SQL, a mini decomposition, data pipelines, ML concepts); Prepfully describes a 60-min pair-coding exercise with a Databricks engineer instead. Assesses: Breadth across apps, data and AI; speed; framing scope before building. [3]
Hiring manager conversation
30-45 min, mostly a walkthrough of past projects; AI FDE candidates may get LLM fundamentals. Assesses: Ownership and depth in past projects, stakeholder communication. [1]
Coding
About 60 min writing a practical function in a notebook, easy-to-medium, using dicts, strings, lists; some loops reportedly allow or expect an LLM / Databricks Assistant. Assesses: Correct, simple, well-narrated practical code; clarifying requirements. [3]
Decomposition (decomp)
About 60 min conversational design session starting from a vague business goal; first 5-15 min spent clarifying. Assesses: Stakeholder, end-user and KPI framing, data awareness, app-first design, prioritization. [3]
Technical deep dive / ML-MLOps system design
45-60 min each; resume-based deep dive and an open whiteboard design problem (more common for AI FDE). Assesses: Production ML/GenAI depth, architecture adapting to changing requirements. [1]
Leadership / values round
Values-based behavioral conversation; one or two rounds. Assesses: Client-facing ownership, autonomy, speed, fit with Databricks core values. [3]
Executive round (mostly senior candidates)
30-45 min with a VP or Director. Assesses: Alignment with company direction, composure with senior stakeholders. [1]
Hiring committee review
Packet review after the loop, per one third-party guide. Assesses: Final calibration; guide says strong candidates are sometimes rejected here. [2]
AI tools in interviews: No employer statement found. A third-party guide (Prepfully, citing candidate reports) says some onsite coding rounds expect candidates to work with an LLM or Databricks Assistant and vet its output, and some candidates received guidance discouraging manual coding. [1]
Questions
Decomposition 3
Mini decomposition: how would you frame an architecture problem, what would you optimize for, and which layer would you design first?
You have a city's traffic data. Build a system that improves traffic congestion there.
A second candidate (S4) reports the same prompt framed around New York City.
Given access to a client's raw data, design the pipeline and application layer that move a specific business KPI.
System design 2
Progressive design: build a medallion (bronze/silver/gold) architecture, add an ML pipeline, move batch to streaming, then add multi-cloud governance.
Design an AI search and Q&A solution over a customer's internal documents.
Coding 2
In a notebook, write a function that turns a list of records into a per-user summary.
Candidate S3 confirms a practical notebook problem easier than typical LeetCode; exact prompt not disclosed.
Implement a simple API from a spec, then explain behavior on invalid input; extend it with persistence and concurrent callers.
AI build 2
At a high level, how would you build a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) workflow?
When would you fine-tune a model rather than improve context and prompts?
Debugging 3
Find and fix why a provided piece of code fails.
Spark executors crash with out-of-memory errors during a join. How do you fix it?
A model looks fine on offline metrics but misbehaves or drifts in production. How do you find out why?
Customer scenario 1
A customer asks for something you believe is a bad idea. What do you do?
SQL and data 1
Write a SQL query returning users who have more than one transaction.
Domain 1
How would you forecast demand for a new product that has no historical data?
Netherlands onsite, October 2026; round not visible in the free preview.
Behavioral 4
Tell me about a client-facing experience.
Tell me about something you owned end to end.
Tell me about a time you had to move very fast or make a decision quickly.
Tell me about a time you pushed back on a customer to protect the outcome.
Motivation 1
Why do you want to be a forward deployed engineer at Databricks?
Tips from the sources
- Decomp matters most: treat the interviewer as the client and pin down stakeholder, scope and KPI before discussing architecture. [3]
- In decomp, design application-first, then data/ETL; add ML only if the use case needs it. Stay high-level and skip caching or sharding detail. [3]
- Coding is practical and easier than LeetCode; keep it simple with dicts, strings and lists, ask clarifying questions and narrate. Interviewers weigh thought process heavily. [3]
- Lead with your strongest of applications, data and GenAI; breadth matters but interviewers look for depth somewhere. [3]
- Map behavioral stories to specific Databricks core values (customer obsessed, truth seeking, first principles, bias for action, etc.). [2]
- AI FDE candidates should ask the recruiter early whether to prepare for LLM or classical ML system design. [1]
- Build something small on the free Databricks edition to learn the platform before the loop. [1]
- Expect process churn: candidates report the loop being revamped, and RSA loops being converted to FDE loops midway. [1]
- One 2026 candidate found Databricks' own prep materials detailed; ask your recruiter for them. [4]
Not found in public sources: No employer-published FDE interview guide or AI policy found (databricks.com interview-guides URL 404s). No Reddit threads reachable. Deployment Strategist and Engagement Manager loops undocumented. Stage counts differ across sources (5 to 6+ rounds), and the screen format varies (breadth quiz vs pair coding). Several candidate write-ups are partly paywalled. A Prepfully citation to a Databricks engineering leader's blog could not be located.
