Process

  1. Recruiter screen

Call with a non-technical recruiter. Assesses: Communication, motivation, customer orientation, fit for a fast-paced environment. [1]

  2. Technical take-home

Hands-on exercise inside Devin with little hand-written code; candidates report a substantial task and tight deadline. Assesses: Product understanding, hands-on skill, framing work around customer value. [1]

  3. Project presentation

About 45 min walkthrough of a past technical project to a panel; slides optional; some panelists play a less-technical or difficult customer. Assesses: Impact framing, clarity for non-experts, decision rationale, composure under follow-ups. [1]

  4. Leadership one-on-ones

Behavioral conversations with VPs and engineering leaders. Assesses: Presence with senior stakeholders, adaptability, judgment. [1]

  5. Executive pitch

Simulated pitch of the product to a panel playing executives. Assesses: Value articulation, persuasion, product command. [1]

  6. Case-study customer call

Fictional company with challenges, a fixed prep window, then a simulated live customer call. Assesses: Rapid structuring, real-time customer communication. [1]

  7. Onsite build / pair programming (some candidates)

One mid-level candidate describes a very hands-on onsite including building an automation engine and pair programming. Assesses: Hands-on building. [2]

AI tools in interviews: No employer statement found. Reported take-homes are done inside Devin, Cognition's own AI agent. [1]

Tips from the sources

  • Lead with impact: say why a project mattered to the business within the first few minutes, before build details. [1]
  • Expect follow-ups you cannot fully answer; acknowledge the gap, reason aloud, and offer to follow up rather than losing composure. [1]
  • Treat the take-home as a customer would: set up Devin, run a realistic workflow, and tie its function to customer value. [1]
  • An offer recipient says the hard part was not coding but the 'why' questions; they spent about a month learning what the role involves. [2]
  • In the case-study call, structure the challenges during prep but expect the customer to steer away from your plan. [1]
  • One senior candidate's process was stopped because the team decided it wanted more customer-facing experience; be ready to show it. [2]

Not found in public sources: No employer-published process. All stage detail comes from one third-party guide plus candidate submissions on the same site; the stage sequence varies across candidates (some report a hands-on onsite with pair programming rather than pitch/case rounds). A techinterview.org guide about Cognition SWE interviews was not used because it is not FDE-specific and cites no sources.
