Anthropic interview
Forward Deployed Engineer, Applied AI · Manager, Forward Deployed Engineering · Solutions Architect, Applied AI · Applied AI Engineer
Process
Application
Resume plus written answers, including a 'Why Anthropic?' response; candidates must confirm they have read the AI guidance. Assesses: Motivation and written communication; posting says the Why Anthropic answer is weighted highly (often 200-400 words). [2]
Recruiter screen
About 30 min. Assesses: Background, motivation, level fit. [4]
Technical use-case screen
Practical Claude deployment scenario (MCP tooling, long-context reliability). Assesses: How you reason about deploying Claude for a customer. [4]
Coding exercise
Multi-stage incremental problem on a CodeSignal-style platform. Assesses: Writing code as requirements change across stages. [4]
Hiring manager round
Technical and behavioral deep dive on past projects. Assesses: Ownership, judgment on when an LLM fits, adoption outcomes. [4]
Solution design / final panel
Architect a Claude deployment for an enterprise customer, plus behavioral. Assesses: Scoping, failure modes, security/compliance trade-offs. [4]
Values / culture interview
Non-technical round in the onsite for nearly every role. Assesses: Ethics, honesty, willingness to disagree, views on AI risk; reported as a major late-stage rejection point. [6]
Solutions Architect loop (candidate account)
Recruiter, hiring manager, panel presentation; each 45+ min; 2-3 weeks. Assesses: Motivation and role fit; presentation to a panel. [7]
AI tools in interviews: Anthropic's candidate guidance (updated July 2025): write application drafts yourself, then Claude may help refine them; Claude is encouraged for interview prep; take-homes and live interviews are without AI unless Anthropic says a specific task allows it. Applications require confirming you have read this guidance. [1]
Questions
System design 2
Design an API that lets users sample from large models, then design batch optimisation for it.
Described prompt, not verbatim
Handle security and compliance for a Claude deployment at a regulated customer such as a government contractor.
Described prompt, not verbatim
Coding 3
Implement an LRU cache, then extend it as new constraints arrive in later stages.
Convert sampled stack data into execution traces of function calls.
Read a set of files and remove duplicates.
Customer scenario 1
Role-played buyer: convince me Claude does something ChatGPT cannot.
Vendor blog; cites candidate reports only generically
Domain 1
Why did you use ML or an LLM for that problem, and how did you know it fit?
Behavioral 3
Walk through your most significant project and justify its key technical decisions.
How did adoption go, and how long until the solution was production-ready?
Describe an unusual belief you hold and how you have defended it.
Daniela Amodei's description of the culture test, via Bloomberg summary
Motivation 2
Why Anthropic? (written application answer, typically 200-400 words)
Tell me about yourself, why Anthropic, and why this role.
Tips from the sources
- Draft application answers yourself and use Claude only to refine; never let AI describe experience you do not have. [1]
- Using Claude to research Anthropic, rehearse answers, and prepare questions for interviewers is explicitly encouraged. [1]
- Invest in the 'Why Anthropic?' answer; the posting says it is valued highly. [2]
- In the values round, honest skepticism and a real example of a troubling decision land better than rehearsed enthusiasm; recruiters say strong technical candidates still fail here. [6]
- In customer discovery role-plays, ask and reflect back rather than pitch, and give concrete deployment-risk reasoning instead of generic responsible-AI language. [5]
- In solution design, drive the conversation: scope first, name failure modes early, and state trade-offs explicitly. [4]
- Expect little feedback between rounds; one Solutions Architect candidate reported minimal feedback after each interview. [7]
Not found in public sources: No first-hand FDE candidate account found on Reddit, blogs, Taro or Aced (Aced's Anthropic FDE experiences tab is empty); coding and design questions come from third-party guides. Glassdoor/Blind FDE reports exist but are excluded by policy. Stage counts conflict across guides (five vs six stages; whether a take-home exists). No employer description of the FDE loop itself.
